Summary

Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed。 Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter。 When the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear。 Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism。

The sense of longing evoked in Khaled Hosseini's Alf shams sati'a is compelling and universal: the passionate search for love, family, home, acceptance, a healthy society, and a promising future, regardless of the obstacles。 Like The Kite Runner, this novel transcends boundaries and illuminates the people and culture of a region that has been reluctantly thrust into the international spotlight。 Above all, however, Alf shams sati'a is a stunning literary accomplishment。

This book was beautiful。 This was my first book in a while and really reminded me of why I loved reading in the first place。 The images it paints in your mind, the emotions it evokes - I couldn’t put it down。 I read it inbetween work and meetings and at every chance I had。 Beautifully bittersweet and heart wrenching。 Takes you on a wild roller coaster ride。 I also loved how I learnt so many new historical events and phrases! Truly a work of art。

This book was a roller coaster of love, sadness, longing and hope。 I’m floored how well the male author has captured the female experience with such grace and nuance。 Such a wonderful, sweeping book。

Pretty good! Definitely not a genre a typically read but I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to read Kite Runner soon!

A heartbreaking lament。 Also surprisingly funny。 Here's a description of the city of Herat: you couldn't stretch a leg here without poking a poet in the ass。 A heartbreaking lament。 Also surprisingly funny。 Here's a description of the city of Herat: you couldn't stretch a leg here without poking a poet in the ass。 。。。more

A Thousand Splendid Suns took my breath away, and my words away as I write this review。 It was devastating yet hope still existed in the form of Mariam and Laila’s bond。 It’s also extremely relevant with today’s current affairs, and has served as a marker for me to read even more about Afghan history, particularly from a woman’s perspective。 The prose was beautiful too。

This was an amazing book!! I loved it!!The only OFF thing I felt about this book was that at times it went too fast and thus not very much information was provided。 Had there been a bit more information provided, I would have given this book a 5 star。

In tears, I couldn’t help the tears。What a tragically beautiful story told so perfectly and in great detail, I find with Hosseini’s writing, that it draws me in and it feels as though I’m actually there。 I went through a series of emotions while reading this book happiness, anger, sadness and from time to time a mixture of all。 I did not know what to expect but definitely was not expecting to be in tears so late at night (when I actually read it)。 I felt the loss in this book so close to my heart In tears, I couldn’t help the tears。What a tragically beautiful story told so perfectly and in great detail, I find with Hosseini’s writing, that it draws me in and it feels as though I’m actually there。 I went through a series of emotions while reading this book happiness, anger, sadness and from time to time a mixture of all。 I did not know what to expect but definitely was not expecting to be in tears so late at night (when I actually read it)。 I felt the loss in this book so close to my heart as if they were close family members of mine, hahah。 Beautiful, tragic and grateful。 。。。more

It's heartbreaking, beuatiful, amazing, and it changes the way I think about life。 Through Mariam dan Laila, their struggles to keep on surviving under the endless suffering of the war, within their so called home and in their country。 On how Mariam's selfless, on how Mariam's brave, and on how Mariam's struggle to keep finding happiness and peacefulness in the middle of war。 Women and their own strength, their own capabilities that no men or no beings can bring down。 I wish I could meet the rea It's heartbreaking, beuatiful, amazing, and it changes the way I think about life。 Through Mariam dan Laila, their struggles to keep on surviving under the endless suffering of the war, within their so called home and in their country。 On how Mariam's selfless, on how Mariam's brave, and on how Mariam's struggle to keep finding happiness and peacefulness in the middle of war。 Women and their own strength, their own capabilities that no men or no beings can bring down。 I wish I could meet the real Mariam and give her a long hug and to ask her how could she endure all the pain and hide all her emotions behind her tight long warm smile。 I wish I could learn more of her。Khaled brought the writer to an unforgetful lives of Mariam and Laila, amazing women, mothers, sisters, wives, and fighters。 Every words that written in the book are meaningful, life changing I could say, heartbreaking in its most, hence beuatiful beuatiful written。 Clawing into my mind, my heart, and my whole conciousness。 Mariam, I'll never be fine if I remember that name again。 But also, I'll never not miss every single of her heroic and bravery。This novel is 10/10 must read, I'm honestly sad it has to end。 。。。more

This book is heavy— but the writing sweeps you away and immerses you completely。 You cannot help but stand right in the room with each character, feeling their terror, sadness, happiness, and love。 I am better for having read this book。
